2024: The Overrated List

Let’s chat about the ‘hits’ of 2024 that everybody’s been talking about, but I didn’t exactly love…

4. Why I didn’t love: Challengers (2024)

When the trailer’s better than the film…Challengers aims to be cool and edgy; the cost? Devoid of narrative and doesn’t make you care for any of the characters. A fanfiction would do a better job at creating tension, there was zero chemistry, making for a painfully awkward watch. One of the sloppiest screenplays of the year.

3. Why I didn’t love: Baby Reindeer (2024)

Stalking is a serious matter, but this self-indulgent show is not the way to highlight it. Netflix’s wildly overhyped self-pity fest needs one big trim. The harsh truth: it would’ve worked better as a film. It follows a shallow, narcissistic character that’s simply unlikeable and unbearable to watch. The unfunny protagonist will give you secondhand embarassment for its entirety; painful isn’t the word.

2. Why I didn’t love: Moana 2 (2024)

With great sadness, Moana 2 felt uninspired and soulless, slapped together in what felt like a panicked rush to match its predecessor. When it had every opportunity to do so, it displayed neither innovation, nor new ideas. Instead, it resembled a montage of nonsense, devoid of a strong, gripping narrative, with each song feeling borderline AI generated. Disney didn’t know the way and had nothing new to say.

1. Why I didn’t love: Drive Away Dolls (2024)

The critics have been screaming about this one for months, and I don’t quite get it. You could say it’s underdeveloped at its very best. Since when did a plot that goes…nowhere and poorly written characters become such a cinematic marvel? Sigh. We’ve seen it all before.
